Archaeology and other project research

Would you like information for a historical or archaeological project, or about an antique, artefact or artwork?

Our services are also available for specialised research for filmmakers, journalists, and writers.

Whether your question revolves around the history of a community, regional trends, or documentation of everyday life in the past, we can help.

We have experience of working within the following specialisms:

  • Policy-making
  • Publication Standard research
  • Project management
  • Bid writing and funding applications
  • Strategic planning
  • Stakeholder engagement and management

The following are some examples of the sectoral work we can engage with.

Media

An increasingly sophisticated audience is demanding greater historical integrity in media productions. Producers of documentaries, dramatic films, and educational programming often hire historical consultants to advise on costumes, scenery, props, dialect, and content accuracy. Most television networks and large production companies will require the services of a historian, and we have experience of working with media productions and the entertainment industry.

Publications

We also write articles about family history, property history and local history for national newspapers, magazines and web platforms, and provide research assistance to authors working on a range of historical publications.

Archaeology

We work across the historic environment and projects will encompass archaeology, historic buildings and historic landscapes.

We can undertake or contribute to the management of projects – conducting site visits and archival research, providing consultancy advice and support to internal and external clients and stakeholders, preparing project reports, and specifying and overseeing historical fieldwork programmes.

Museums

For museums, we can help put together materials for a new exhibit and research artefacts for display.

One of our commissions from a collector in Pittsburgh, USA, was to provide a story around the uniform below. Not only did we find a great deal of information on the officer’s service in the artillery of the 51st Highland Division – where he won the Croix de Guerre and was twice mentioned in despatches – but we traced his life and adventures before and after the Great War. He returned to his farm in Angus where he married and had a son, but died at a young age in 1930 of pneumonia, possibly connected to him being gassed during the war. His son continued to live and work the farm until his death in 2020.

Community

You may also work for an organisation or group that’s trying to get local or national funding for its heritage-based project/s, or are looking for some input into aspects of those projects. We are open to discussions around how we can assist you to achieve your heritage project objectives.

We would strongly urge you to contact us so that – at no cost to you – together we can chat through exactly what it is you wish to achieve and what you expect. We can then design an approach to suit your requirements.
